Bold, green and sculptural. There are many large leaved plants I love working with. Specially in smaller spaces they might be all that is needed to create a lush atmosphere. The images are the leaves of Tetrapanax papyrifera, Catalpa bignonioides ‘Aurea’, Pauwlownia tomentosa, Gunnera manicata, Trachycarpus fortunei (Chusen Palm) and Musa basjoo (Japanese Banana). It’s not necessary exotic plants that fill this category. Angelica and Rheum (Rhubarb) are brilliant large leaved perennials.
One thing to note is that big leaves come at a price: they require lots of water and food. In addition the plant often needs a particular pruning regime.
